Change within industries that have a technological base is at the least consistent.
With photography there is always a bigger, better, faster camera just around the corner. Sometimes the fact there is creativity and a sound practical skillset behind the imagery is completely overlooked.
I watched a photography session yesterday that I think will push the genre of water photography to a new level. In this instance Russell Ord swam onto an open ocean bombora in a solid swell to capture peak action surfing. The resulting images are amazing.
It would be easy to become lost in the bravado of the shoot but my guess is that there is more to this than just swimming a bombie for the sake of it.
I asked Russell a couple of questions about the session and these were the answers.
From a creative sense what were you hoping to capture with the combination of large swell and the mechanics of this location.
“It was just for me mostly I have loads of photos from the channel and basically that is easy to do. This way it becomes far more of a personal challenge. “
You said you wanted to go deeper, why?
“You need to be very close when using the 16mm – one meter or so can look so much different.”
At this point there are several images from the shoot floating around on the web but I know some of the best have been held back for other projects. Keep your eyes open for them.
For sure Russell and other photographers are going to keep pushing the boundaries for new creative ground. Better technology will be a part of the mix but as an overall statement it is their commitment and skill that will be the major driving force in pushing creative limits.
